Why Worry When You Can Pray

“And why take ye thought for raiment?…”  Matthew 6:28

Last week, I heard a chorus that I can remember singing as a child. It came to my mind again this morning while reading in Matthew 6. The above phrase asks a question – “why take ye thought”…in other words, “why worry”?  The preceding verse asks another question – “Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?” (Matt. 6:27) In other words, which of us can add any length to our life by worrying? This passage goes on to exhort us to “take no thought”. Three times God reminds us, don’t worry! When it comes to food and clothing – the necessities of life – He has promised to supply our every need!

Why worry when you can pray
Trust Jesus He’ll be your stay
Don’t be a doubting Thomas
Rest fully on His promise
Why worry worry worry worry
When you can pray

(John W. Peterson)
