Do You Remember When _____________?

“We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly. Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea.”  Psalm 106:6,7

Reading the above verses this morning reminded me of something I was telling a dear sis just yesterday – how the Lord had impressed my heart that morning to THANK HIM for my memory! Because of my memory, I can look back and remember what the Lord has done for me in the past and therefore receive strength for the present.

There are some who, because of sickness, do not have their memory anymore. My dad suffered from Alzheimer’s for several years before his death and witnessing the effects of this disease on my “strong in body” daddy was very hard and very sad. And although for some, the failure to remember is out of their control due to illness, for others, the failure to remember may be a choice. I know I have been guilty many times of choosing to dwell on my present troubles instead of remembering past victories. In doing so, I was choosing doubt instead of faith; sorrow instead of joy; weakness instead of strength.

Not only that, when we choose to stew and fret over our current trial instead of remembering the multitude of the Lord’s mercies, are we provoking God? That is what the above verse indicates that the Children of Israel were doing. I certainly do not want to be guilty of that!

Lord, thank you again for my memory…and help me to choose to remember!

What about you this morning? Do you remember when __________? (fill in the blank)

“And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High. I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old. I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.” Psalm 77:10-12
