Baby Doll Cloth Diaper – A Tutorial

Having a GRANDdaughter now has given us new opportunities for sewing! For Christmas, Courtney requested some handmade cloth baby doll diapers for little Callie Ann’s babies. (Every little girl needs to learn how to take care of her babies, right?)  Anna decided she wanted to take on this project as her gift to her little niece, and last night she was able to make one of these diapers in no time.

The material is the same that Anna used a few months ago to make a skirt for Callie. To line the diaper, she chose a lime green with white polka dots piece of felt (from a pack of felt I found on clearance several years ago).

Anna cut the diaper out of both the fabric and felt, using a pattern we found here –  http://onelittleproject.com/how-to-make-cloth-diapers-for-a-baby-doll/.

Placing the right sides together, she then pinned and sewed the pieces, leaving the smaller of the two ends open.

She allowed about 1/4 inch seam and operated the sewing machine by hand around the curves.

The next steps were clipping the corners (being careful not to get too close to the seam), turning the diaper right side out (using the blunt end of a pencil to push out the corners), and ironing it flat. The diaper will have gathers around the curves.

At the open end of the diaper, she then ironed the edge down 1/4 inch, to the inside of the diaper, and then sewed the end closed.

She still needs to add a strip of Velcro at the front of the diaper, as well as two small pieces on each end of the back of the diaper, as tabs. Here’s the finished product, minus the Velcro closure –

And alongside Callie’s matching skirt –

Maybe there’s a little mommy in your life that would enjoy having some cloth diapers for her baby!
