“Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.\u00a0And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all<\/span>.”\u00a0I Chronicles 21:23<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

In an effort to turn away the wrath of God, David has asked Ornan for the use of his threshingfloor to build an altar for sacrifice. We read Ornan’s response above. A portion of Matthew Henry’s comments on Ornan’s response is as follows:<\/p>\n

“Ornan generously offered it to him gratis, not only in complaisance to the king, but because he had himself seen the angel<\/i> (1Ch 21:20<\/u><\/a>), which so terrified him that he and his four sons hid themselves, as unable to bear the brightness of his glory and afraid of his drawn sword. Under these apprehensions he was willing to do anything<\/span> towards making the atonement. Those that are duly sensible of the terrors of the Lord will do all they can<\/span>, in their places, to promote religion, and encourage all the methods of reconciliation for the turning away of God’s wrath.” ~\u00a0Matthew Henry\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

My thought this morning – Can I say, “I give it all”? As Christians, I truly believe a genuine fear of the Lord will bring us to that point of complete surrender.<\/p>\n

\nAnd have earnestly, fervently prayed;
\nBut you cannot have rest,
\nOr be perfectly blest,
\nUntil all on the altar is laid.<\/p>\n

Is your all on the altar of sacrifice laid?<\/strong>
\nYour heart does the Spirit control?<\/strong>
\nYou can only be blest,<\/strong>
\nAnd have peace and sweet rest,<\/strong>
\nAs you yield Him your body and soul.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Would you walk with the Lord,
\nIn the light of His word,
\nAnd have peace and contentment alway?
\nYou must do His sweet will,
\nTo be free from all ill,
\nOn the altar your all you must lay.<\/p>\n

Oh, we never can know
\nWhat the Lord will bestow
\nOf the blessings for which we have prayed,
\nTill our body and soul
\nHe doth fully control,
\nAnd our all on the altar is laid.<\/p>\n

Who can tell all the love
\nHe will send from above,
\nAnd how happy our hearts will be made;
\nOf the fellowship sweet
\nWe shall share at His feet,
\nWhen our all on the altar is laid.<\/p>\n
