For The Young Folks – “Who Are We Following?”

It’s been a good while since I’ve had Anna write a guest post on here. I thought her journal entry today would be a good reminder for the young people – of course, we older folks can certainly benefit from it as well. 🙂

Today, I shared from Exodus 23:2, “Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil…”  In my Bible, I have written beside this verse, “Don’t follow the crowd!”. We all tend to do what everyone else is doing. We are more prone to “follow the crowd”. Why do we feel this way? Because we don’t want to feel left out. We don’t want to be alone therefore, we go along with the crowd while not even thinking of the danger that might be in it. Is the crowd drawing us closer to the Lord or are we slipping farther and farther away from Him? If we are hanging out with ungrateful people, there is a real good chance that we are going to become ungrateful. If we have a friend that is always talking bad about the pastor, then we just might start talking bad about him too. That’s just the way it goes – our friends rub off on us! That’s why it’s so important that we have friends that are drawing us closer to the Lord. Proverbs 13:20 says, “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”

Who are we walking with? Who are we following? If “the crowd” is causing us to slip away from the Lord, then we need to stop following them even though it might mean being alone.

Can we handle that? Can we handle being alone because we chose to sell out for God? You know, when we decide to just walk with the Lord and do what pleases Him, we are not actually alone; the Lord is with us! And, when the Lord is all we have He’s ALL we need! Why is it that the more we grow in the Lord and serve Him, the fewer people we see doing the same thing? Simply because it’s not the popular thing to do! Have you seen the quote “Go the extra mile – it’s never crowded”? The farther we go with the Lord, we’re going to find the road less traveled. So, let’s ask ourselves, “Am I okay with taking a stand to do what’s right even though it may mean being alone and facing ridicule from others?” What would our answer be?

“Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.” I Corinthians 15:33
