God's Will,  The Tongue,  Wisdom/Discernment

Blessing or Backfiring?

Within the last week, I have had two conversations where the same topic has come up. One, where an individual spoke of times when they have taken matters into their own hands only to see it backfire on them. The other, where I have had the opportunity to give warning to follow the Lord’s leading in a matter instead of following their own emotions…or else it may backfire. I had to confess to both of these individuals that there have been plenty of times in my life when following my own counsel brought about worse circumstances than the initial problem.

Both of these instances came to my mind this morning as I read the following verse:

“He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he.” Proverbs 16:20

This verse speaks of favorable results when we handle situations wisely. Who wouldn’t want that? Unfortunately, because of our old flesh, this is often easier said than done. When faced with difficult situations, in order to handle them wisely, we must first deny our own fleshly instincts. This may mean stepping back and doing nothing or holding our tongue instead of speaking our minds.

There will always be situations that will require some sort of action on our part but before we do anything, we must earnestly seek wisdom from the Lord. This will require humility as we say, “Lord, I really don’t know what to do here…”  But, God knows a sincere heart and if we are truly desiring to handle a matter wisely, He PROMISES to give us the wisdom we need.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:5

Remember, leaning on our own understanding can often backfire. How much better to trust the Lord to lead and guide us!

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5,6
